A little history: waffles originated around the 14th century. Belgian Waffles made their U.S. debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. August 24 marks the day in 1869 when the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York. Chompie’s story began in 1979 when the Borenstein family — Lou & Lovey and their children, Mark, Neal, and Wendy — ventured west from Queens, New York. They brought an extensive menu of their favorite foods, including authentic N.Y. style pastrami and corned beef Mile High Sandwiches, traditional matzo ball soup, fresh specialty salads, burgers, chicken sandwiches, smoked fish, and breakfast favorites like omelets, eggs benedict, pancakes, and Belgian Waffles.
This is our favorite quote about waffles, from comedian Amy Poehler: “We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work, it doesn’t matter. But work is third.” We invite you to come into Chompie’s Saturday, August 24 and celebrate one of the most important things in life: waffles!
